Volunteer

Internships

Since our founding, the Crag Law Center has hosted volunteers from all walks of life.  Crag has worked with hundreds of volunteers, including students from area high schools and universities, scientists, accountants, professional fundraisers and regular people. For our summer program, Crag takes on up to four student interns from law schools across the United States.  We rely heavily on the help from volunteers to accomplish our mission.  Crag Law Center interns have gone on to develop successful careers in the public interest.

During the School Year - On an ongoing basis, Crag accepts inquiries from interns for volunteer opportunities during the school year.  Crag encourages students to get in touch with us before the semester (ideally 3 months) in which you would like to intern with Crag.  For example, for internships in the fall you should contact Crag in the beginning of the summer.   That being said, you are welcome to check with us at any time to see if we have a slot available.  For the summer, Crag typically has one internship slot available for an undergraduate student.  Undergraduate applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as they are interested.

Summer Associates will assist one or more staff attorneys on litigation and client projects involving NEPA, NFMA, CWA, ESA, MMPA, CAA and/or equivalent state statutes.  The work will involve conducting legal research, drafting pleadings, memoranda and/or correspondence, and assisting the attorneys in preparing for argument in state and federal courts. Summer Associates may also be involved with organizing client campaigns, outreach and education activities, site visits, and fieldwork.

Qualifications: Excellent legal research, oral and written communication skills; good analytical ability; established computer and on-line research skills; and a solid and demonstrated work ethic.  Past work for a conservation group is a plus.  Applicants that demonstrate a strong commitment to conservation work and an ability to work in a healthy yet high intensity work environment are preferred.

Summer associates typically work 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. The summer associate is expected to secure his/her own funding and most receive public interest scholarships through their school.

To apply: Please email your application as one Adobe PDF document in this order:  a cover letter, resume, list of three references, and short writing sample (3-5 pages).  The email should be addressed to:  ralph (at) crag.org and the title should read “2012 Crag Summer Associate application.”

Applications received by mail will not be considered.  No telephone calls, please.  Application deadline is January 19, 2012.  Interested and qualified applicants are encouraged to apply early.  Summer associate positions will be filled on a rolling basis.  Following these instructions is important, and not doing so will reduce your chances of securing a spot with us for the summer.
