Mentoring the next generation of advocates has always been a fundamental part of our mission.

Through our Emerging Leaders Program, we’ve mentored over 175 leaders over the last 20 years. Every year, we focus on developing the leadership of individuals from varied backgrounds who demonstrate a passion for justice and a desire to pursue a career in public interest environmental work.

Our Summer Associate and Legal Extern internships are open to current law school students, and our Communications and Development internships are open to high school students and above. For the most part, we only offer summer internships. We occasionally offer part time internships to Legal Externs and Communications or Development interns in the Fall & Spring.

One of our goals is to make our summer internships available to people with perspectives historically excluded from the environmental movement. To make our summer internship program more accessible, we offer paid stipends to all summer interns whose school institutions do not provide them full funding for summer internships.

Internships for law school students

Summer Associates

Through our Summer Associate program, Crag provides opportunities for law students to gain hands-on experience working at a public interest environmental law center. Law students work one-on-one with Crag attorneys, gaining exposure to litigation, advocacy, engaging with clients, and legal research and writing for our active cases.

Our Summer Associate positions are full-time (40 hours/week) for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer (May–August). Summer Associate positions are paid $20/hour for up to 400 hours. Work study funding may also be available to qualifying candidates.

We are now accepting applications for our 2024 Summer Associate positions and will begin reviewing applications on October 4, 2023. More details available here.

To apply: Please email as a single Adobe PDF document a cover letter, resume, list of three references, and short writing sample (3-5 pages) to Rebeka Dawit at rebeka[at]crag.org. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning October 4, 2023, and we encourage early application. Final deadline is December 1, 2023.

Legal Externships

Crag offers limited legal externship opportunities during the fall and spring semesters. If you are a law student interested in a semester legal externship, please contact Maura Fahey at maura[at]crag.org. Inquiries for fall externships must be received no later than August 1st; inquiries for spring externships must be received no later than December 1st.

Communications & Development Internships

Our Communications and Development internships are available for individuals aged 15 and above interested in working at a public interest environmental law nonprofit and supporting the development and communications team with fundraising, outreach, and communications projects. By helping to communicate about our work, interns have an opportunity to learn about the landscape of environmental laws and how we use them to protect our communities, climate, and wild places.

For Summer 2024, we are offering up to two full-time internship positions. Stay tuned – we’ll post the application materials in 2024.

All Summer internships are typically 8-10 weeks long, 40 hours a week, between the months of June – August, with working hours are between 9 AM-6 PM.
