Internships and Fellowships

Through our Emerging Leaders Program, Crag offers a variety of opportunities to train the next generation of environmental advocates. Read our various programs to see how Crag can help you develop your own passion for protecting the environment.
Internship Program

Crag offers internships year-round working with our development & communications staff and with our staff attorneys. Crag staff have worked with emerging leaders at various stages in their paths – from law school to high school.

During the School Year – On an ongoing basis, Crag accepts inquiries from interns for volunteer opportunities during the school year.  Crag encourages students to get in touch with us before the semester (ideally 3 months) in which you would like to intern with Crag.  For example, for internships in the fall you should contact Crag in the beginning of the summer.   That being said, you are welcome to check with us at any time to see if we have a slot available.

Summer – Most of Crag’s summer internship positions are filled through a competitive application process. For law students, please see below for details about our Summer Associate program. Crag also hosts undergraduate interns each summer through the DukeEngage program. If you are interested in summer internship opportunities outside of these programs, please get in touch with us no later than March, as our summer positions tend to get filled by early spring.

Summer Associates

Through our Summer Associate program, Crag provides opportunities for law students to gain hands-on experience working at a public interest environmental law center with the option of earning academic credit. Law students work one-on-one with a Crag staff attorney, gaining exposure to a full case docket, engaging with clients, and producing legal documents for our active cases.

To apply for a 2021 Summer Associate position review the details and applications instructions here.

Legal Fellow Program

In recent years, we have developed and grown a successful legal fellowship program that provides young attorneys a unique opportunity to establish a career in public interest environmental law.  Our current Legal Fellow is Ka’sha Bernard, who joins us for a two-year fellowship from Septmember 2019 – 2021.

DukeEngage Summer Internship Program
Crag is proud to partner with DukeEngage-Portland, a service-learning program that engages Duke University students in an 8-week summer internship with sustainability-focused Portland-based nonprofits and government agencies. Crag’s Development and Communications team work with the DukeEngage students to build on the student’s interests and skills while providing a well-rounded experience of communications and fundraising work at a small non-profit environmental organization.
