Looking for a fun way to connect with native plants and creativity?
Learn how to create a moss ball (kokedama), the art of bonsai without a container! This workshop will be led by Weina Dinata, who is not only Crag’s Development & Outreach Assistant, but the owner of Poppy & Finch, a PNW native plants studio helping people connect with nature. 15% of the workshop fee will be donated to Crag as part of our Earth Day Oregon campaign!
Weina is hosting two workshops on Saturday, April 26. In these workshops, you’ll create your own unique moss ball while learning about the beauty and crucial role of native plants for our habitat especially in the urban landscape. Creative tactile meets connection with nature from a meaningful and ecological way.

What: Moss Ball (Kokedama) Workshop

When: Saturday, April 26 from 11 AM-12:30 PM or 5 PM-6:30 PM

Where: Poppy & Finch Studio, 8012 SE 13th Ave. Portland, OR 97202 (in the back outside corridor of Plural Collective)
- Plant options: You can choose either native plants (covered outdoor area) or tropical plants (indoor) when you sign up
There’s only 7 spots per workshop session, and you must register by April 22, so get your tickets early! Must be at least 15 years old to participate.

What to expect
In this workshop, you’ll create your own unique moss ball while learning about the beauty and crucial role of native plants for our habitat especially in the urban landscape. Creative tactile meets connection with nature from a meaningful and ecological way.
This workshop involves standing for short periods of time throughout the workshop.
Green or herbal tea and light Japanese snacks will be provided, please bring your own mug if you’d like.
Your workshop fee includes:
- All materials/supplies: organic soil, bonsai mix, native or tropical plants, preserved sheet moss, strings/cord, a hand ceramic mushroom, and a bird decoration (additional decoration is available for purchase)
- A gift bag for easy transport and perfect for gifting
- A print out of information about gardening with native plants, resources/tips of local sustainability/ecological organizations and a list of native plant nurseries
Street parking is free, please include extra time to find parking. You are welcome to arrive 5-10 minutes before the event to walk around the shop.
Can I bring friends?
Yes, please bring your friend, just purchase another ticket! The first one to sign up with a friend will go home with a surprise gift! Each workshop is limited to 7 participants, and you must be at least 15 years old to participate. Get your tickets here before April 22.
When are the morning and evening sessions?
Both workshops are on Saturday, April 26 at Poppy & Finch Studio! The morning session is from 11 AM – 12:30 PM. The evening session is from 5 PM – 6:30 PM.
